Common Dental Implant Fears Addressed By Bamonte Oral Surgery

October 19, 2024

Dental implants have revolutionized oral health, offering a durable, natural-looking solution for missing teeth. However, many patients still experience anxiety and apprehension when considering this procedure. At Bamonte Oral Surgery, we understand these concerns and are here to help alleviate them.

This blog will address the most common fears associated with dental implants, providing you with the information and reassurance you need to make an informed decision about your oral health. Whether you are worried about the pain, the cost, or the recovery time, we have you covered.

Anxiety About Local Anesthesia

One of the top concerns regarding dental implants is the administration of local anesthesia. Many patients are afraid of anesthesia in general; they fear that they will feel pain during the procedure or that it won’t effectively numb their mouth. However, rest assured that our team at Bamonte Oral Surgery is highly trained and experienced in administering anesthesia to ensure both your comfort and safety.

We utilize non-intravenous conscious sedation. This type of sedation is used to alleviate the anxiety and fear that is associated with dental procedures. It works by placing the patient into a “depression of consciousness, where they will forget the event and any discomfort it may have caused.

It works by placing the patient into a “depression of consciousness, where they will forget the event and any discomfort it may have caused. We utilize Halcion, Ativan, and Valium to achieve the state of conscious sedation and help the patient have a calmer experience.

We also utilize nitrous oxide, which is inhaled through the nose and will help you feel more relaxed during the dental procedure. Our goal is for you not to feel any pain, but if you experience discomfort, please let us know so we can adjust your dosage accordingly.

Sensory Issues: Worries About “Feeling” The Screw in Your Jaw

Some people are sensitive to sensory input and may fear that they will be able to feel the screw in their jaw after their procedure. However, dental implants are placed deep in the jawbone and covered by gum tissue, so you should not feel the screw once it is fully healed. The implant will eventually integrate with the surrounding bone and become a natural part of your mouth.

The implant can take roughly 3 to 6 months to feel completely normal. When healing, it is normal for you to feel some swelling and discomfort. To ensure the healing process goes smoothly, practice good oral hygiene and attend your regular dental checkups.

Fears About Infection Resulting in a Removal of the Dental Implant

Another common fear is that an infection could result in dental implant removal. While this is a risk with any surgical procedure, it is highly unlikely if proper care and hygiene are maintained after the surgery. Dental implant infections are rare, with a postoperative infection rate of only 4% to 10%. If a bacterial infection does occur, we can often manage and heal the infection with antibiotics. The sooner the infection is treated, the better the outcome.

Our team at Bamonte Oral Surgery will provide detailed instructions on caring for your implant site and closely monitor your healing process. In addition, we utilize state-of-the-art techniques and technology to ensure a safe, comfortable, and successful implant placement. This includes sterilizing all tools and equipment used during the procedure and using antibiotics or antimicrobial mouthwashes to prevent infection.

Fear of Numbness or Paralysis as a Result of a Dental Implant Procedure

Some patients may also fear that a dental implant procedure could result in numbness or even paralysis of the mouth or face.

While this is an understandable concern, it is incredibly rare for such complications to occur. If you experience symptoms such as numbness in the jaw or lips or numbness in your chin, tongue, or face areas, be sure to notify our office.

Nerve damage or compression can cause numbness, which can often be fixed by repositioning or removing the implant. The numbness is usually temporary, but in rare cases, it can be permanent.

At Bamonte Oral Surgery, our team has extensive experience in performing dental implant procedures, minimizing the risk of nerve damage. Furthermore, we use advanced imaging technology to carefully plan and place your implants, ensuring they do not interfere with any nerves or other vital structures in your mouth. Our top priority is always your safety and well-being.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants have a 95% success rate after ten years of placement. Excessive drinking, smoking, poor oral hygiene, etc., can increase failure. With correct placement and proper care, dental implants can last you a lifetime and offer numerous benefits, such as improved speech, easier eating and chewing, preservation of facial structure, and a boost in self-confidence.

Moreover, dental implants are more cost-effective in the long run compared to other replacement options like bridges or dentures that may need frequent repairs or replacements. With their natural appearance and function, dental implants also allow you to enjoy a variety of foods without worry.
